Bridge constructed by PWD 'missing', RTI reveals INDORE: In the Shyam Benegal-directed movie 'Well done Abba' - a well constructed by government goes missing from village.
This reel story depicts a closer reality in Khajur Kho village of Jhabua district, where a river bridge constructed by state public works department (PWD) has gone 'mysteriously missing'. While the movie showcased villagers filing a FIR to get the well back, people of this village filed a RTI to trace it. And not so surprisingly, the bridge was made only on papers. Funds meant for construction of the bridge were also fraudulently paid to a fictitious contractor. Villagers have to cross this river to reach market, school and other places. During monsoon, they remain cut off from rest of the world for want of a bridge. Considering their persistent demand, state government approved construction and allotted money in 2010. The RTI filed by Indore-based RTI activist Rajendra K Gupta revealed that for two consecutive years, around Rs 5 lakh, which was earmarked for construction of bridge, lapsed and later PWD officials siphoned it off by showing the bridge constructed in documents. Gupta said that after the RTI query and a subsequent complaint, government has ordered an inquiry through development commissioner of Madhya Pradesh. Kamal Singh, resident of Khajur Kho village, said following years of requests, the government had approved the bridge but now things remain hanging fire. "Children are still crossing the river to reach school. Perhaps they are destined to learn the hard way," he said.
