"There is an urgent need to educate persons with disabilities," said J P Singh, former member secretary of the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), which falls under the jurisdiction of the Union government. The speakers also discussed the need for changes in educational curriculum, implementation of various provisions available and how they could be used. The two-day meet: 'Change the system for the disabled', was attended by Sudesh Mukhopadhyay, chairperson of RCI, Vasant Thakar, chairperson, zonal coordination committee (Western Zone), B M Tayade of the Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration and officials from the commissionerate of persons with disabilities. Mukhopadhyay said that rehabilitation of disabled should be done on the basis of their requirements as well as the resources available. "People working for the disabled such as educators, parents and professionals should make use of the abilities of these people in making them independent. Doing so with the help of available government provisions will go a long way in making them financially, academically and socially independent," he said. J P Singh said that those working towards ameliorating the condition of the disabled should see that a system to implement the laws and provisions for the benefit of the disabled is in place. "There is also a need to check if such systems are implemented properly. Educating each and every person as per the need and bringing him or her into the mainstream is of absolute necessity," he said. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To unsubscribe send a message to [email protected] with the subject unsubscribe.
