CHANDIGARH: Reading Punjabi literature or subject books in Punjabi will no more be a hindrance to people with visual disabilities. The Punjabi Espeak reading software would be introduced in the city by National Association for the Blind (NAB). This software is already available in English, Hindi and some other languages. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/Punjabi-software-to-help-visually-impaired/articleshow/46305666.cms The software is designed using Non Visual Desktop Access (NVDA) and works by reading the onscreen text. "This software will open doors for all those who wish to read and write Punjabi books, literature and novels. Students will be able to read Punjabi text relating to their textbook content. There are nearly three lakh visually-impaired in Punjab and they would surely be benefitted," Vinod Chadha, president of NAB, Chandigarh. To make visually-impaired members in Tricity and Punjab proficient in the software, a two-day training session is being organized on Friday and Saturday.
The training will be given by two NGO's - Daisy Forum of India, New Delhi, and Centre for Internet Society, Bangalore. "They will also assist trainees about other assistive devices that have come recently and can benefit visually-impaired in one or the other way," Chadha said. "The specially-designed training programme will be attended by 20 visually-challenged persons comprising computer teachers, employees and students of university and local colleges who will further impart skills to others in the region," he said. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ To unsubscribe send a message to [email protected] with the subject unsubscribe.
