You are comparing apples to oranges. The Kurzweil 1000 is a dedicated
blind-specific application. Fine Reader is a OCR meant for everyone. To add to
Raju's message, one ability that is significant with blindness OCR programs is
the ability to scan and read at the same time. You cannot do this with fine
reader. As regards scanning text from images, yes, you do indeed get a lot of
junk but much depends on what you are scanning. If you are scanning a book
containing screen shots, then you need your OCR program to recognize the text
within diagrams. 

You may want to consider  the Lex system as well. The program is similar to fine
reader but uses Omnipage as the OCR if I am not mistaken. The k1k and Fine
Reader allow you to try them so test them before buying.
