Very important issue I think,

I had an opportunity to see some detailed geographical, astronomical,
landscape maps in braille and on embossed plastic at XRCVC, Mumbai. It
had almost everything that the sighted kids learn in their mainstream
schools. I felt child like curiosity when I was touching rivers,
mountains, seas-oceans and states-countries on the maps. I was
nostalgic as I had seen school level maps when I could see a bit.
I had enquired for the same because I wanted to know military
positions of Abdali and Marathas in the war of Panipat and wanted to
allay my confusion regarding positions of Yamuna and Ganga.

I wonder how many VIs don’t feel lost for not knowing which direction
they are facing and which part (North/south/east/west) of the city
they are in. Wherever I go, I try to know which location I am at or
else I would feel very uncomfortable and lost. Citing an example of my
VI friend, he answered me that he was in south of the city but he
could not explain what exactly south means. He had remembered it as an
address and not as a position compared to the whole city geography or
India or the whole planet sphere.

Importantly, knowing maps, directions, astronomical positions of stars
and planet helps person’s imagination and overall intelligence.

I felt very sad when I was informed that such quality maps are no more
available in NAB Mumbai or elsewhere. VI children who are currently
doing their schooling will be deprived of such amazing beauty of
physical science and nature if they are not introduced to these maps.

I prayed to the XRCVC to maintain these treasures as they are more
valuable than ever as these are not available anymore.

Please keep me also informed if you are able to get hold of any
detailed maps. I would love to have them in my possession as my new
query is, where Lake Maansarovar is located and why is it better to go
through China’s territory there.

Cheers
