Summery

First leg of such meetings was with the Chair Person of Social
Welfare Board, Government of Punjab, Virender Kaur Thandi. The second
leg was with the honourable union minister of HRD Ms. Smriti Irani.
Via the HRD minister, we have been made to have a meeting with the
honourable minister of states for information and broadcasting
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.

AGENDA DETAILS

Since the inception of radio udaan, we have been keen in
propagating equal and qualitative education to the Visually impaired
at par with that of the sighted. To proliferate that, we have been
campaigning for making Mathematics and Science subjects to be
mandatory in all Visually Impaired/Blind Schools till Class 10th.
Apart from that, we have placed the following demands in front of the
union minister of HRD Smriti Irani.

To
Ms Smriti Irani ,
Union Education Minister
Government of India .
Date: 15 June 2015

Dear Madam ,
This is to request you that since you are the Education Minister we
would like to point out some points which we want you to please look
in to .
The points for concern according to us are:
1. In all the blind schools there are many students who want to learn
science and maths but fail to learn it as there is a choice of music .
Those students who want to learn music have a field day but for those
who do not want to learn music they have no choice as music is
compulsory . States like Tamil Nadu , Haryana and Odisha have made
science compulsory for blind students till class 10th . The students
there are doing very well and we think that other states can also
follow this system and make the students learn these two subjects.
2. We would like to make compulsory Science and Maths for the blind
community till class 10th. This will help the students crack the
competition exams in the future .
3. It is sadden to bring this point under your notice that, quality of
education in special schools is very poor. It is a big hurdle in the
development of Community.
4. Also would like to make compulsory the use of technology in the
education system . This is the age of technology and everywhere it is
used to the fullest . So it would be good for the blind students to
learn this system . There are many screen reading softwares in the
market which easily helps the blind person to work on the computers .
Screen reading softwares like NVDA are free of cost and are easy to
work on . We would like to make computer science as a compulsory
subject from class 1st so that the blind student can work on the
computers independently and make full use of the latest technology .
5. Further in the education system of the country there should be
disability discourse so that everyone is aware of the blind community
and its wants .
6. Under the Right to Education Act , there is guideline that
education will be provided to all but still there is discrimination in
some of the private institutes regarding the admission to the visually
challenged students . There is not much awareness among the general
masses regarding this . Guidelines must be issued to all so that there
is no problem during admission time . Since we are working on the
radio we have reported many instances regarding problem during
admission .
7. India is lacking of such hostels which accommodates Visually
impaired Females. Even city like Delhi which is considered well
awared, does possess no hostel facility. We request you to open such
hostels for visually impaired college going females.
We hope that these points will be looked in to and something good
will come out in the future for the blind community .
Thanking you,
Danish Mahajan
