Dear Access Indians,

I am extremely happy to share an extremely commendable achievement of my
good friend which has set a great milestone for our visually impaired
community.

Vivek Pachpande, a philosophy lecturer from Mumbai has achieved entirely on
his merit but not on reservation basis, one of the most prestigious and
highly competitive in nature scholarships in the world called “Commonwealth
Scholarship” which is awarded by the British government and the Association
of Commonwealth universities in the United Kingdom.

The awards are offered in various subject areas of studies, but securing it
for humanity and particularly in Philosophy is highly tough which Vivek has
accomplished. There were approximately 2,000 applications from all over
India, approximately 250 were shortlisted for the interview at the Ministry
of Human Resource Development, 75 were nominated and approximately 30 were
awarded the scholarship by the U.K. government. Friends, above figures
give us idea on the level of competition Vivek had with the sighted
scholars. For his PhD, he will go to University of Edinburgh, Scotland,
United Kingdom. Edinburgh University ranks 17th in the world university
rankings, QCS and stands 4th in the United Kingdom.

Vivek Pachpande has 100% blindness by birth. He has done Masters in
Philosophy from Mumbai University and published number of papers in
national and international conferences. Despite all odds he pursued his
subject of liking i.e. Philosophy. He is currently doing his M.Phil while
teaching at Mumbai University as a visiting faculty. He is equally good
with technologies for the blind and an expert macbook user.

I am extremely happy for Vivek for his great accomplishment which will give
many of us lot of motivation in pursuing diverse areas of academics and
careers.

Heartiest congratulations to Vivek Pachpande.

Regards,

PRASHANT NAIK
