I occasionally get web access (my primary access is via my little Philips Velo
handheld PC), so I've researched this at liszt.com and others. I have yet to receive
an answer. So let me ask you:

* I would like to receive a daily (or more often) comprehensive report on US news,
polotics, current events - basically the headlines at CNN or MSNC or ABC ... but it
doesn't seem to be available. Any pointers?

Also, from the documentation, I found the followin URL:

http://www.rz.tu-claustha.de/~inof/Welcome.html

Hope it may help.

Subject: Signature guidelines

Some interesting guidelines on "signatures" used in usenet / mailing list
messages, from a post in comp.mail.misc:

- quote -

A 4-line signature limit was first imposed by B News 2.10.something in
the vicinity of 1984. I remember this event; it was done for very
good reasons. You can dig out the ancient, archived source to B News
somewhere on ftp.uu.net to find this.

See INN FAQ 4.9, regarding INN's acknowledgement of this long-standing
conventional limit, enforced by INN's inews implementation.

Spencer's Son-of-RFC1036 (which never achieved RFC status, but is now
being supplanted by the USEFOR [Usenet Format] draft RFC) observes:

Early difficulties in inferring return addresses from arti-
cle headers led to "signatures": short closing texts, auto-
matically added to the end of articles by posting agents,
identifying the poster and giving his network addresses etc.
If a poster or posting agent does append a signature to an
article, the signature SHOULD be preceded with a delimiter
line containing (only) two hyphens (ASCII 45) followed by
>>> one blank (ASCII 32). Posting agents SHOULD limit the
>>> length of signatures, since verbose excess bordering on
>>> abuse is common if no restraint is imposed; 4 lines is a
>>>       common limit.
  ...
NOTE: Four 75-column lines of signature text is
300 characters, which is ample to convey name and
mail-address information in all but the most
               bizarre situations.

Take particular note of the phrase, "verbose excess bordering on
abuse".

The USEFOR draft has some sort of similar observations about
signatures, though I don't recall their content this instant, and
can't recall where to get the draft, either. Hm; the perils of
having fallen off the USEFOR mailing list.

Stored queries require registration.
Excerpt from the Help file:
After you have created your Reference.COM account, you can store queries
in our database. Note that whenever you define, modify, run, or delete
stored queries, you must specify your user name and password as the
first line of the body of the message, as in the following example:
[...]

If you had a query that you wanted to run once a day, once a week or at
any other time interval, it's nice to be able to store it and have it
run automatically rather than having to send the request every time you
want your query to run.

This web page only really has two links to resources. One (WebWorks) is
a page for a digital newsletter for AutoCad --
http://www.cadonline.com/webworks/index.htm

The other says Cadalyst top ten sites --
http://www.cadonline.com/topten.htm

I don't really know what it is you are trying to do. If you received
the page you stated then you could have used the reference numbers
found in "[ ]" to retrieve the other pages.
No web by E-mail request is going to give you all pages, just the ones
you specify.

I'm confused how you tried to use archie anonymously. If you telnet to
archie, the login word is "archie" as in:

telnet (titanic.cs.mcgill.ca)

Welcome to the ARCHIE 3.5 Server at
McGill University, School of Computer Science
                       Home of the original Archie!

Titanic login: archie

                            Welcome to Archie!
                                 Vers 3.3
# Bunyip Information Systems, Inc., 1993, 1994, 1995

# Terminal type `ANSI' is unknown to this system.
# `erase' character is `^?'.
# `search' (type string) has the value `exact'.
[...]
archie> quit
# Bye.

In addition the archie help files have this to say:
Using the Interactive (telnet) Interface
In order to use the interactive system you should use the
   following procedure:

   1) telnet to the archie system closest to you. Do not use
ftp for this, it will not work.

   2) Login as user archie no capitals, no password is
required. The system should print a banner message and
status report before presenting you with the command
prompt. Some newer operating systems will prompt for a
password. Just hit the return key and continue.

   3) Type help for complete information on the system.

See my archie help file:
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1236/archieh.html

Furthermore, Archie is used to find files located on FTP sites, not
download them...

My favorite is InfoBeat. InfoBeat delivers personalized news straight
to your e-mail box.
Finance, News, Weather, Sports, Entertainment, Snow reports,
Reminders, Classifieds, etc.

I don't know if you will be able to signup to this service by using a
Getweb server. The form is at:
http://www.infobeat.com/main/cgi/main_merc.cgi?action=userprofile&
which I did retrieve with a Getweb server. You fill out the E-mail
address, forward back to Getweb, and it should send you another form.
