I am taken aback to find that Mr. Boyd is so heavily commited
*around the calendar.* More strength to him when he says he needs no

A car runs out of gasoline and gets us onto terra firma but one can hack
around the clock when using computer. I discover that switching off gives
new creativity, avoids the onset of stupor and dullness, high-blood

How can I use gophermail server [EMAIL PROTECTED] to browse ftp directories?

#
Split=500K

And server returns to me blank messages instead of ftp directory contents.
Is it possible to use this server for directory listing retrieval at all?
May be I send wrong requests? Correct it, please, if I'm not right.

You can't or least I haven't figured out how to do it.

I'm surprised that this server is back in operation. The owner took in
down 17Sep98. I just tried it myself and notice that it does work but
sends the warning message.

Well it would help the list members if you would be more explicit. That
is, what kind of science paper? just any kind or a specific one?

The answer no doubt to your question would be yes. You would use a
search engine by E-mail methods to look for the paper you wanted.

Not with the bitftp mailers. However, if you use one of the ftpmail
servers that support the reply-to keyword, then you can redirect the
mail to that address.

The Getweb servers allow a search of YAHOO, ALTAVISTA, or INFOSEEK
depending upon which search engine you want.

Use the command

Subject: FTP by Gophermail

Accmailers,

After my previous answer about FTP sites by gophermail I decided to
finally figure out how to get an FTP file directory listing of an ftp
site by gophermail. Well, guess what? I did it.

Using the example requested by Alexander A. Chistyakov

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
#
Split=0
Name=Directory Listing
Type=1
Port=70
Path=ftp:ftp.freebsd.org@/pub/
Host=gopher.eunet.cz

The format for the body of the message is as follows:
# [use as separator if you want more that one file retrieval]
Split=0 [use 0 if you want to receive one large file - default is 27Kb]
Name= [Subject title that you want returned in your E-mail message]
Type= [9 for binary, 0 for text file, 1 for directory listing]
Port=70  [default gopher port]
Path=ftp:[Name]@/[Path]/[File] [where Name is ftp site name,
         Path is file path, File is the filename you wish to retrieve]
Host= [gopher site that supports file transfers]

In this case there was no file to retrieve, so the [File] part is
omitted from the Path. Also because he wanted a directory listing, the
Type=1 is used rather than Type=0 which implies a text file retrieval.

I'll have to start working on more of this and finish the section in my
howto1.html document,
because this will give us another method for large FTP files.

Subject: Re: How to ask for a file on behalf of someone ??

Per my earlier message, here's an excerpt from the HELP file at BITFTP. You
would use the PATH command to request a file that is to be sent to another
address.

------- Forwarded Message Follows -------

BITFTP attempts to determine your return address by parsing the mail
file it receives from you. It uses the address specified in a
"Reply-to:" line in the mail headers in preference to the address
specified in the "From:" line. If you specify a "PATH" command in the
body of the mail, that address will be used in preference to either the
"Reply-to:" or "From:" address. The format of a "PATH" command is
simply "PATH userid@nodeid". If you are on BITNET/EARN/NetNorth, you
should not specify a path. In general, you need specify a path only if
you get no response from requests to BITFTP otherwise.

BITFTP supports a "path" command which is the same as "reply-to". Send a
"help" request to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and the resulting file will
document it.

Well I checked the gophermail by Usenet listings and didn't find
"us.jobs.* at either USENET News (University of Canberra, Australia) ,
USENET News (Imperial College, UK) or
USENET news (Technical University Wroclaw, Poland)

The other gophermail Usenet interfaces are defunct.

However, I did find the set of us.job.* groups at DejaNews
us.jobs  12431 articles

us.jobs.contract  11604 articles
us.jobs.misc  825 articles
us.jobs.offered  78891 articles
us.jobs.offered.contract  402 articles
us.jobs.resumes  6718 articles

You might try this command string:
send http://www.dejanews.com/[ST_rn=bg]/dnquery.xp?search=word\
&svcclass=dncurrent&showsort=date&ST=QS&query=~g%20us.jobs

Replace the last query with the group you are trying to read. I show
us.jobs

I tried Reference.com by web page and E-mail but it's still generating
error messages.
"Query failed: unknown PTP error (424)"
