The principle of encoding is the same on both methods, talking each 6 bits
of original data and making a byte (=8 bits) out of them, and here you
have the 33% increase which both of the methods share.
You may find that base64 (MIME) encodings are a bit smaller, but the
difference is rather negligible (has to do with the extra "M" that
uuencode adds to each 61 characters (I include here <CR>, there is no
need to include <EOL>), and due to some other negligible. If your e-mail
program gives support for MIME then I guess, it would be easier to use
Base64. If not, then there is no practical difference.

Subject: How can I receive a large file through Juno?
Hello,
Recently I've been trying to get a digest
from one of the email lists I'm on.
I have Juno, and each time I try to get
this particular file, Juno says it's too big.
How do I split the file into parts so I can
receive it??
Thanks,
Susan

Have you browsed what is on the simtelnet/win95/ site? There may be some
thing of use there.
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Body:
open
cd /pub/simtelnet
dir
cd win95
dir
cd fax
dir
get 00_index.txt
quit
I am not sure of the directory structure in the win95 section, but the
above may work, and contains enough DIR commands to help fix errors. In
the win95 there should be a file name ending in -l.zip. Get it, as it
has a combination of all of the 00_index.txt files. If there is a fax
directory, then the above should get you the index of that.
Good Luck!

Subject: Re: Infested ACCMAIL Digest
>From the discussions of one of the mailling lists
that support listserv list-owners
it would appear that the mail containing the happy99 virus
which was sent to the list will now be in the archives.
Although it will be in all encoded
if someone accesses the archives
some mailers will reconstruct the happy99.exe file.
So long as they don't execute it they will be fine,
but the consensus among listowners
is that would be prudent for one of the listowners
of the infected lists
to edit the archives and remove the code.
I get the mime version of the digest and the happy99.exe
showed up.
I just deleted it
and I would hope most people would do the same.
In the nomime digest it would just have shown up
as incomprehensible code and be harmless unless de-coded.
Hope this helps

A computer infected with Happy99 sends a copy of itself out attached to
mail and usenet posts!
That is why it has spread so much.

I don't see it in my root directory, nor in my juno\user0003 directory
where I receive my digest. Juno does not support attachments, so was it
likely stripped?

...SnipxSnip.....
The digest referred to in above correspondence , (ie, #1999-73) , posted to
me,
was with a date-stamp : Sun, 14 Mar 1999 00:04:47 -0500 which was nearly 12
hours AFTER the date stamp on the above message of Avi Ben Zev - In terms
of EST, his posting was at 12:14 PM on 13 Mar 1999 even some 7 minutes earlier
than the message of Patricia which started the above correspondences in the
first place.
So, very likely is that the date stamping on Avi Ben Zev's posting was based on
a clock running late by more than 12 hours;
But another reason is not ruled out :
If it is only that the clock for date stamp on Patricia's mesage was
running faster,
then the above scenario could have happened also if Avi Ben Zev was responding
to the same day's digest but released to him at least 12 hours earlier.
Is it so that the same day's digest gets posted to different groups of
subscribers at different times, that I didn't know of ?
I did not get happy99.exe attachment with my #1999-73 digest. I also did not
find in my HD, the ska.exe and ska.dll files which are supposedly caused by the
happy99 virus as informed in the ACCMAIL Digest - 28 Feb 1999 to 1 Mar 1999
(#1999-61) . Is it really true that this virus came out to all of us with the
#1999-73 digest?

No, Gerald, you didn't. There are just some dumb mail readers which take
the line "begin 644 Happy99.exe" from the middle of an e-mail, disregard
that no code at all is following, and pretend there were a program file.

Hi!,
From the "accessing the internet by e-mail" document:
...
[Reading Usenet Newsgroups
-------------------------
Once you've handled the preliminaries, you'll need to know how to read
and contribute to Usenet newsgroups by e-mail. To read a newsgroup, you
can use the gophermail service discussed earlier in this guide.
To obtain a list of recent postings to a particular newsgroup, send the
following lines to one of the gophermail servers mentioned previously.
Specify "Subject: get all" and include only these lines in the message
body.
(You must replace "<newsgroup>" below with the name of the Usenet
newsgroup you wish to access. eg: alt.answers, biz.comp.services,
news.newusers.questions, etc.)
Type=1
Port=4320
Path=nntp ls <newsgroup>
Host=services.canberra.edu.au
If this doesn't work, you can try another Host by substituting one of
the lines below.
Host=gopher.ic.ac.uk
Host=risc.upol.cz
Host=gopher.tc.umn.edu (maybe, very busy)]...
Does anyone know of other hosts? Is there a list available somewhere?
Many thanks for your help!
