Subject: Fine tuning Modem Tools ?1?!?

Hi there Help-netters:

I have a question regarding an internal 57.7b/s modem that came
with my kid's Compaq Presario.

The problem is that a while back, I used to connect to my ISP using
this modem, and it was working fine. Then I had a problem with the
M$ Win 95 registry, so I installed Windows again. But after I did this,
I wasn't
able to connect to my ISP.

I'm able to send out and receive faxes, get into many BBS services,
etc.,
etc., but for some reason, when the modem dials my ISP, after it has
"talked" to the ISP's modem, it just freezes, and after a while, it
disconnects.

I already checked all the settings, TCP/IP configuration, host name,
DNS,
account ID and password, and everything seems to be ok. Then, I
substitute this modem for an external modem (Motorola Surf) using the
same
settings and telephone access connection and it links fine, without any
problem.

I have also tried many fine tuning communication tools like MTUspeed,
to no avail. I just can't get this darn internal modem to connect to
Internet via
my ISP.

What else can I do? Is there any software out there to help me out in
correcting this problem? After all, the internal modem is working
fine,
except when it comes down to connecting to my ISP. Is this modem
bewitched
or something? God, I just can't get it to work with my ISP and since my
kids use this
computer, I'd like to keep this modem working properly, just like it
used to.

Or is it that the M$ IE4.01 that I also installed before this problem
arose is
bewitched?

I know for sure that Mr. Boyd will have something to say about this,
since
like me, he prefers using Linux, to this M$ Windows wiliness !!!!

Sorry, I hope I haven't upset you, but I had to let it out and vent ...

Another friend from south of the border,

Mauricio Solorzano

P.S. btw, happy Easter holydays !

You should always believe me (:>) Here are 4 resources:

(1) What is VALERT-L?

It is an electronic mail discussion forum for sharing urgent virus
warnings among other computer users. Postings to VALERT-L are
strictly limited to warnings about viruses (e.g., "We here at
University/Company X just got hit by virus Y - what should we do?").
Followups to messages on VALERT-L should be done either by private
e-mail or to VIRUS-L, a moderated, digested, virus discussion forum
also available on this LISTSERV, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Note that any
message sent to VALERT-L will be cross-posted in the next VIRUS-L
digest. To preserve the timely nature of such warnings and
announcements, the list is moderated on demand (see posting
instructions below for more information).

What VALERT-L is *not*?

A place to to anything other than announce virus infections or warn
people about particular computer viruses (symptoms, type of machine
which is vulnerable, etc.).

How do I get on the mailing list?

Well, if you are reading this, chances are *real good* that you are
already on the list. However, perhaps this document was given to you
by a friend or colleague... So, to get onto the VALERT-L mailing
list, send a mail message to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. In the body of the
message, say nothing more than SUB VALERT-L your name. LISTSERV is a
program which automates mailing lists such as VALERT-L. Within a
short time, you will be placed on the mailing list, and you will get
confirmation via e-mail.

(2) What is VIRUS-L/comp.virus?

It is an electronic mail discussion forum for sharing information and
ideas about computer viruses, which is also distributed via the Usenet
Netnews as comp.virus. Discussions should include (but not
necessarily be limited to): current events (virus sightings), virus
prevention (practical and theoretical), and virus related
questions/answers. The list is moderated and digested. That means
that any message coming in gets sent to me, the editor. I read
through the messages and make sure that they adhere to the guidelines
of the list (see below) and add them to the next digest. Weekly logs
of digests are kept by the LISTSERV (see below for details on how to
get them). For those interested in statistics, VIRUS-L is now up to
about 2400 direct subscribers. Of those, approximately 10% are local
redistribution accounts with an unknown number of readers. In
addition, approximately 30,000-40,000 readers read comp.virus on the
USENET.

As stated above, the list is digested and moderated (comp.virus
postings are sent out individually). As such, digests go out when a)
there are enough messages for a digest, and b) when I put all incoming
(relevant) messages into the digest. Obviously, this can decrease the
timeliness of urgent messages such as virus warnings/alerts. For
that, we have a sister list called VALERT-L. It is "moderated on
demand" and undigested. Messages sent to VALERT-L get sent out as
quickly as possible (subscribers receive full instructions on how to
post 24 hours a day). VALERT-L is for the sole purpose of rapidly
sending out virus alerts. Anyone who does not adhere to this one
guideline of VALERT-L will be immediately removed from the list.
Subscriptions and deletions to VALERT-L are handled identically as
those for VIRUS-L (see instructions below).

What VIRUS-L is *NOT*?

A place to spread hype about computer viruses. Contributing to rumors
merely makes them worse. It is not a place to sell things, to
panhandle, or to flame other subscribers. If anyone *REALLY* feels
the need to flame someone else for something that they may have said,
then the flame should be sent directly to that person and/or to the
moderator (that would be me, [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Is there a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document?

Many network groups maintain a FAQ sheet to document commonly asked
questions (and answers), primarily for newcomers to the lists. The
VIRUS-L/comp.virus FAQ is available from many of the archive sites,
including the anonymous FTP site at cert.org (192.88.209.5) in the
pub/virus-l directory under the filename "FAQ.virus-l".
Alternatively, the FAQ can be obtained by e-mail; simply send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] stating, "info virus-l".

What sort of message is relevant to the group?

Any message that is virus related and that adheres to the posting
guidelines (see below) is relevant and will be posted. In the past,
VIRUS-L has never restricted itself to any particular
hardware/software platform, although most messages tend to be PC or
Macintosh based. Nonetheless, discussions of viruses on other systems
(e.g., UNIX) is allowed and, in fact, encouraged.

My stance on moderating the group has always been (and will probably
remain) that I make sure that a message is relevant to the group, and
post it. I will avoid editorializing or altering messages, although I
may toss in an additional point for clarity from time to time. That
is to say, anyone who has something to say to the community may do so,
within my guidelines. As a result, there will undoubtedly be some
duplication from time to time. I invite your feedback on this.

One thing to bear in mind when sending a message to this (or any)
public forum is that you have a potentially *very* large audience -
this group is read by an estimated 10000-20000 people around the
globe. As such, it is advisable to be particularly careful about how
you word things. More on this topic below in the guidelines...

Doubt that. I got the message and I only get 1-2 messages per day (in

These are my favorite 3:

America's Job Bank
http://www.ajb.dni.us/

Career Mosaic
http://www.careermosaic.com/

MonsterBoard
http://www.monster.com/

However, for a listing of many more retrieve these web pages:

http://www.snap.com/directory/category/0,16,-68,00.html?st.sn.fd.0.dir-68

The method to do the search you requested can be done at AltaVista by
E-mail methods.
You can get the file by anonymous FTP at:
  get ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsalta.faq

Or by Agora, Getweb, or W3mail
  send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsalta.faq

You can also search AltaVista via the Getweb servers.
SEARCH ALTAVISTA [string you want to search for]

You can also use the www4mail server to retrieve the AltaVista home page:
http://www.altavista.com/

or the text-based home page

Use a www4mail server to retrieve these pages:

Medline searches
PubMed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/

Internet Grateful Med
http://igm.nlm.nih.gov/
This site requires more rerievals depending upon which database you

Achoo Internet Heathcare Directory

Health A-Z Search
http://www.healthatoz.com/

For some more Medical search engine sites, retrieve this web page

I'm hoping that some of the medical personnel on this list can provide
you with some detailed information as I don't have any knowledge of the
subject matter.
