My bad,
I had my filterInvocationInterceptor misconfigured. Aperantly if you pu tyour objectDefinitionSource property values in a single line like:
<bean id="filterInvocationInterceptor" class="net.sf.acegisecurity.intercept.web.FilterSecurityInterceptor">
...
<property name="objectDefinitionSource">
<value>
CONVERT_URL_TO_LOWERCASE_BEFORE_COMPARISON PATTERN_TYPE_APACHE_ANT /secure/admin/superuser/**=ROLE_SUPERUSER
CONVERT_URL_TO_LOWERCASE_BEFORE_COMPARISON PATTERN_TYPE_APACHE_ANT /secure/admin/**=ROLE_ADMIN
</value>
</property>
</bean>
It doesn't like it.
They need to be like:
<bean id="filterInvocationInterceptor" class="net.sf.acegisecurity.intercept.web.FilterSecurityInterceptor">
...
<property name="objectDefinitionSource">
<value>
CONVERT_URL_TO_LOWERCASE_BEFORE_COMPARISON

Hope somebody else can learn from my mistake.
The symptoms of this problem where: logoff did not work, authentication appeared not to work.
