That is certainly not normal, unless you have very very good ears. I have a 3810t (intel graphics) and I can't hear the fan AT ALL most of the time, even when I put my ear to the palm rest. I don't think it's even spinning most of the time.
I can kind of hear the fan if I run CPU-intensive programs (for more than a few seconds).
