I’m afraid noapic is not an option in the long run, at least
for newer systems. BIOS writers simply don’t care for this
because Windows uses the APIC if present. For example,
on my machine the interrupt routing table in the DSDT is
completely broken (using non-existing interrupt links and
wrong I/O ports for enabling interrupt links). Originally
I could only boot with pci=noacpi since otherwise the
interrupt for the SATA controller wasn’t enabled and the
boot hung, and it took me quite some time to find this
command line option. Even a BIOS update didn’t fix the
crappy DSDT.

In other words how does an ‘innocent’ user who installs
Linux on such a system should know about these options
(or how to fix his DSDT)?
