I've been trying for the last 12 days to reproduce this - the suspect machine
has been up the entire time on different versions. But it has been working even
in kernels that had problems within an hour or so of booting.

Obviously I have tried to keep the software environment stable but I have had to
update a few packages to run the newer (2.6.15) kernels so it looks as though
something has changed to mitigate this bug (or maybe it was never in the kernel
and has actually been fixed).

I'm not likely to keep this hardware active for much longer anyway

I'm closing the bug myself (if that's OK).
