Maybe figuring out the kernel panic would help?  Because the kernel
panic comes and goes, depending on printk's (and the hang does too -
not happening with lots of debugging, for example), it makes me think
that some memory is getting corrupted somewhere.  And by putting in
printk's we're changing the location of what gets corrupted, so
changing the result but not the (unknown) cause.
