So this works if you drop the old (ACPI-enabled) 2.6.13 kernel
onto the failing system?

Clearly X is changing some state that is confusing the AML that
is executed on the way down, and apparently the BIOS AML is not
ready for it.

Any chance you can update your DSDT per Bob's comments to see
if it gets any further?  Alternatively, you could enable
CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG=y and right before your shutdown you can
enable acpi_dbg_layer and acpi_dbg_level via /proc/acpi
(enable all the bits and kick off the shutdown, it will
 be verbose, but you should get the last thing run at the
end of the console log).
