Mmm. Buggy ACPI then. Might be able to do some sort of hack at the gnome-power-manager level that says that if there is keyboard activity, force the LID open; but this would probably introduce as many extra complexities as it would solve - for instance, what happens when the machine is closed with extra VGA, keyboard and mouse connected.
