lets not get user-space acpid and suspend mixed up
in the state of the lid.
Try this:
# /etc/init.s/acpid stop
# cat /proc/acpi/event
And report if you see the LID events come out of this file
when they actually happen, or with a delay like you are seeing
with the state file. Also, the line for acpi in /proc/acpi/events
should increment at the same time as each lid event.
