Hi Kernel guys (and girls!),
We have bought a Dell PowerEdge 2800 with 2 dual-core
processors but to our great surprise Linux say that we
have 8! Quite interesting, but not really what we were
expecting.
All the Linux indicators say that we have 8 CPUs (mpstat,
/proc/cpuinfo, dmesg, ...) but after checking the specific
documentation for the machine, opening the machine,
checking the physical CPUs and doing a small benchmark,
we come to the conclusion that we "only" have a 4-CPU
machine.
We have seen this problem on multiple distros, that is
why I send the message here instead of the distribution
owner! If I am wrong, please told me.
We are actually with RedHat FC5 (which is the only OS
installed on the machine), but this problem also appeared
when we booted with Knoppix 4.0 and seen 8 penguins
appeared on the screen. Nice to see, though.
Simple benchmark:

After that, the machine was crawling like hell. Really
crawling. Which is not normal for an 8-CPU machine but
normal for a 4-CPU machine!
We would like to do more tests with it, but we can't
since this machine is now part of the production
environment. So, no more fun ... for the moment.
