When I booted back and did a "emerge --update --deep world" (which needless to say, is as hardcore as it looks), my fans started to work as expected (slow at 60+ degrees, full power at 80+ degrees). Don't know what to say. I guess the patch does work. I don't see it in 2.6.19 so I hope it will reach mainline eventually.
