Ian,
as of 2.6.23
CONFIG_HIBERNATION=n
CONFIG_SUSPEND=n
are necessary to disable PM_SLEEP and ACPI_SLEEP,
which are now internal-only config options,
not features selected by the user.

Since this failure happens only with the Adaptec present,
it is probably due to some side effect of trying
to poweroff that device, or somehow that device
is provoking an immediate S5 wake event.
