No problem. I patched the current master with all necessary patches 
and enabled the corresponding debug parts in the kernel. 
After "echo disk > /sys/power state" the system froze with the same 
symptoms as before, and with the following text output after clearing the
console:

Freezing user processes... (elapsed 0.00 seconds) done.
Freezing remaining freezable tasks... (elapsed 0.00 seconds) done
Shrinking memory... done (0 pages freed)
Freed 0 kbytes in 0.53 seconds
Suspending console(s)

My journaling file system might have cleaned up anything that might have been
interesting, but printing syslog output via network didn't help either. 
I suspect that a serial console won't make any difference. I don't know if it
helps, but I have dmesg output before right before crashing the system, I can
post it if it helps.
