The patch (the reverted one) does not break anything.
Please try the thinkpad driver with:
brightness_enable=1
To be honest I didn't try it myself now, but I am pretty sure it works because
it always worked.

The machine is known broken for the video driver (or say unsupported) it needs
black listing to not be loaded and this can be done in userspace.

You can also use attached patch to be sure thinkpad_acpi does the brightness
switching and video does not.

I also wonder why Henrique, the Thinkpad acpi maintainer is not in CC of this
bug or at least asked.
