On my LG TX there are similar symptoms. From the login screen, shutdown and hibernate works. From logged in to Gnome, nothing happens after the text "power off" appears, when attempting to hibernate. This has been like that since upgrading to 8.04, including since the latest kernel update.
After the latest updates, the screen powers off so I can not see any text (when hibernating process starts). The power LED is however still on if I do hibernate from logged in. After power off and power on Ubuntu boots from the saved image.
