Should I be looking for a kernel with a particular version number? Can I get it with aptitude? Will I have to download the source and compile it? Sorry for being so naive, but I am fairly new to linux and have never done this before so it will be necessary to be more explicit or give me some pointers to other information and instructions that I can follow.
