I've had the same problem on an HP 2710p ever since 2.6.24/25. Just today I ran
it on a 2.6.28 kernel, with X86_CHECK_BIOS_CORRUPTION=y and I found the

When the system doesn't crash, the above is repeatable, and produces a
corruption in the same regions of the memory. When the system crashes, I get a
complete freeze (though once or twice I've got an Oops).

The documentation says I can use memmap to stop the kernel from using this
memory. Will try that next...
