If I'm right, I think you're using a gateway laptop, and have another bug
report for the backlight issue on your laptop, right?
So you don't need to comment here because backlight issues are always HARDWARE
DEPENDENT. The problem on your laptops is quite different and your comments
always make me confused. :p

I run out of my ideas about this.
It seems that Linux/ACPI video driver is working normal. It invokes the
firmware code to change the backlight, but unfortunately this fails. It doesn't
look like a software problem to me.
Is there a windows partition on this laptop?
If yes, it would be great if you can verify if the problem also exists in
windows.
