hmm, first of all, let's make sure that we're talking about the same problem.

can you see the GPE storm messages in your laptop?
can you see the i915 error messages in your laptop?
and bugzillakernel...@lez.ath.cx,
can you check which error message is related?
say, can you get the GPE Storm message when the backlight still works?
or can you get the i915 messages when the backlight still works?
