Picture of display showing messages printed when laptop hangs on reboot

I have one of the new dell XPS 15 laptops (model 9550) and a dell USB-C
ethernet adapter.
On a fresh boot I plug the USB-C ethernet adapter (with ethernet cable
attached) and nothing happens. No new interfaces appear and no kernel messages
are printed.
After a couple of minutes this message appears in dmesg:
[ 240.280027] INFO: task kworker/0:2:111 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

The message re-appears continuously every 2 minutes or so.
Then I try to reboot but it never fully manages to powerdown. I attach a
picture of the screen to show the messages that are printed when it hangs on
reboot.

If I boot the computer with the USB-C ethernet adapter already plugged in
everything seems to work nicely. I get an ethernet interface (enp10s0u1)
handled by driver cdc_ether. No weird kernel messages and the laptop reboots
fine.
