Hello all,

In my recent absence from the internet world the server I managed
before has fallen far below par and the current admin/owner of the box
is 'less than cooperative' in restoring it to good condition. :(

I'm looking for reasonable hosting on a Windows-based server in order
to avoid having to recode my entire site (and the others I personally
support, host and manage). I have a friend (Thanks Dave!) who has
kindly offered to host it all for me in New Zealand, but he has a
limited connection and my site alone would eat up most of his
bandwidth (and that's just for my email requirements)... As such, I
appreciate his very kind offer, but don't want to bury his business
for him. :/

I'd rather barter, anyway. And I'd also prefer if the server was in
the USA - California if possible - it'd be really cool to have it in
the Sonora area, but that's just fantasy. I'd like to manage the
server myself since I'm a security geek and have a lot of webservices
and stuff like that which I run on the server - but the 'typical'
hosting provider is *not* going to give me the access I need to make
the server do the things I want, nor should they. The one's that do
offer that kind of thing want to charge an arm and a leg, and that
means I could only support my server a couple months. ;)

Having the server 'local' (CA) is only really important if the person
'handling' the server does not have much Windows Server/PC Hardware
experience; if necessary I could make a weekend trip of setting it up
or making major modifications to the box. Otherwise, I could care less
if the box were in Texas, Delaware or Alaska.

What do I have to offer?
 * I have a fully licensed version of Windows Small Business Server
2003 Premium (includes Windows Server 2003, SQL Server, IIS, Windows
Media Server, Exchange and more), and several other fully licensed
server applications and components.
 * I'm one of the biggest geeks out there. I've got a darned good
memory and more experience doing hosting and server maintenance than
many hosting businesses. I've also personally setup three hosting
companies, including more than a dozen *secure* dedicated servers, and
am one of the few people 'in the biz' to be capable of keeping up on
the latest security threats by following both white- and black-hat
discussion groups that describe the latest exploits and
vulnerabilities (some of these lists get more than a thousand messages
a day).
 * And of course, hosting income: make some money, stick a Windows
server in your closet.

Ideally, the perfect match for me is someone that does hosting
already, but is willing to co-locate a server (with hardware that they
can provide themselves) on their dedicated connection. I need a big
pipe. I get as many as 250,000 _page views_ a month on my own personal
site (not counting images or other resources), and I'm developing
services that will need plenty of bandwidth in order to function well.
If you're already paying for more than a T1 but not using anything
close to your quota then please consider this. I do not (at the
moment) have any hardware (or much cash) to provide. Well, I might,
but I'd have to go through my wife for permission to give away my sons
HDD and ram (I ruined his motherboard late last year and it's just
been sitting there - I can't make use of it ATM anyway)...

I've looked at a couple dedicated servers out there and either they're
price-prohibitive and great support or no-support and cheap as
anything. I'd like *some support* (don't charge me if the box needs
rebooted, or minimal charges if the box needs 'hands-on') but am not
one of those people that needs hand-holding.

To summarize - I'd like to barter with someone who can provide
hardware and a fast dedicated (T3+ static) connection for a Windows
server (nothing too fancy, P3-800 would be more than sufficient to
start - if you're planning to upgrade your desktop anyway, take this
opportunity to setup a new server). I'll provide labor and all
necessary software. You'll have to spend a little time installing the
OS, but I'd be more than happy to walk you through it all on the phone
or IM; after it's up I'll do all necessary management remotely via
Terminal Services directly through the servers internet connection. We
can host sites and split the profit (after hardware/connection
expenses are paid).

Any takers? Please email me privately OR post links to any providers
you think could provide me with what I'm looking for. I'm *going* to
get a dedicated server. I can either have some help with it (please)
or do it myself. I'd rather make it a team effort though. If anyone
else is interested in creating a co-op out of this PLEASE let me know:
