In general, I've found the compression in NTFS compressed volumes to be significantly
less than that offered by ZIP, etc. On the other hand, it's done in real-time and
places little performance impact on a machine with a fast processor. Additionally, of
course, it's transparent to the application, whereas using ZIP would require the
application to access ZIP files directly, which is certainly non-trivial.
Try dumping a bunch of your files into a temporary compressed NTFS volume and compare
what it says about the compression (in the properties window) with what you get from
ZIPping the same files.

windows 2000 supports compressed folders. when you
create a file on a compressed folder it is compressed
automatically so you dont have to do anything. But i
am not sure if the compression ratio is as good as
winzip or other formats
