I get round this problem by creating a separate process within 4D to send the email.

It works great.

I had a similar problem, the work around I employed was to do the
email at a later date from a method I ran from the server.  I imagine
it would not be too much more difficult to have a process running in
the background that checked for new records and then went about
sending the emails

I would agree with this solution. The emailing is what is taking so much time.
