I understand now about the "_x" and "_y" suffix.

Aparajita and Brad correctly identified the "no form variables" problem.
I had copied faithfully the demo "backend" page code (which did work) 
into my real db web folder.
What I had missed was the fact that I had inserted a new "Front End" page 
(with links to various pages) immediately before the "backend" pages.
When adding the page links to this new page, created using DreamWeaver, I 
omitted to add the "/4DCGI/" to the links.
DOH!
I will always insert "/4DCGI/" in a link.

Now, if only I could find a way to select A4D commands from inside 
DreamWeaver, it would save a bit of messing about (going back and forth 
to BBEdit).
