There have been several posts over the last week with people having problems with 4D Client as web server and Active4D. I was thankful that I was not having a problem, but now I am - and it seems to be different than the others.

Problem is, I don't know what changes have caused the problem.

We upgrade to 4D 7.0.8 Mac OS X (panther)
Active4D 4.0 (rc7)
4D server as TCP/IP layer

The 7.08 upgrade was done last week. I had upgraded to rc7 a few weeks back, but then noticed that it had dropped back to rc5 when we did a structure update and I guess the plugin was not upgraded on the server. Still a little confused on plugins and where they go and when they are copied to the Client. Back to that in a minute.

The problem that has shown up the last few days is that the client would start to be slow or none responsive - both as a web server and as a client. Opening up a 4D window would be very slow. Clicking on a record would take 10-20 seconds to be selected. Yesterday, I just quit the client and the problem cleared up. I did notice on the server that there were about 10 processes for the web client that didn't have names running - all waiting I/O. Other clients seem to be ok, even though the process screen on the server was showing almost everything awaiting I/O. I think one other time in the last few days, someone using Quick Report Editor ran into a problem where it wouldn't allow you to do anything. Don't know if I can tie that into the equation yet.

This morning the same thing happened, but we were notified by a user that had a record locked error, saying the our web client had the record opened. The problem is that it was for a table that I NEVER open read/write in Active4D and there were no tables opened on the client. Looking on the server I had the same conditions. About 10 processes with no name, unresponsive web and client. This time I aborted the blank processes on the server and the web server became response - for about a minute, then the client crashed. I do have a crash log saved. Starting the client up, everything was back to normal.

Maybe I have not noticed this before, but noticed that all Clients had Active4D Housekeeper running on them. After a debate with Doug Hall on where plugins go, me swearing that I did not have Active4D. 4CX on the server and he saying it won't compile without the plug-in. I gave up the battle (not a 4D person - just Active4D). Should Active4D Housekeeper be running on all the clients, even if they are not a web sever?

I'm not sure what is spawning these blank process on the server. I'm still fishing, but wanted to put out something that maybe would help track down a problem that seem to only have started recently.
