This one has me a bit stumped. I'm not sure if it's me, A4D, 4D Web Server
or Microsoft...

Server Side: Active4D v4rc6 using 4D Web Server, 4D 2003.4, Windows
Client Side: Internet Explorer, Windows

We have a site that that allows web users to log on to it and amongst other
things download documents.

We are encountering a sporadic problem where if an Internet Explorer user
clicks on a link to download a document AND then chooses the option to
automatically "Open" the document (as opposed to download it), then that
user's default application (Word or WordPad) will give a "File Cannot be
Found" error. The applications appear to be looking for the document in a
temporary folder used by IE. A manual inspection appears to confirm that the
document is not there.

I say sporadic because it only affects some environment/browser combos. If
it does affect a system then it consistently affects that system. We can't
quite figure out what the non-working environments have in common. For
example, on two nearly identical windows XP systems one worked and the other
didn't. The working one had an older office service pack. We upgraded it
which caused it to longer work. Great! Now I could say that it's all
Microsoft's fault, except...

The error message also occurs on an older windows system that we use for
testing. On another site, created by our .net developers, they use a similar
technique for file downloads, affected systems seem to be able to do this
sort of file download fine.

To reiterate...

* The error only occurs if the user chooses the "Open" option. It does not
occur if they first choose the "Download" and then open the document
manually.

* It only occurs with Windows IE (Firefox fine, Macintosh in general fine)
and then only for some users or possibly OS environments and/or IE versions.

* A .net site that happens to use a similar technique for file downloading
works without errors.

I THINK that I am correctly setting headers and MIME types etc (the browsers
recognise the type and use the correct application) but if anyone is willing
to look at it, then I am eager to post the file download code that I am
using.

Any help appreciated
