The manual was not as explicit as it should have been. It should have  
said this in the intro to the Regular Expressions chapter:

The syntax for patterns used in these functions closely resembles  
Perl. The expression should be enclosed in delimiters, for example a  
forward slash (/). Any non-alphanumeric character (other than  
backslash) can be used as the delimiter. If the delimiter character  
is used in the expression itself, it needs to be escaped by a backslash.

The ending delimiter may be followed by various modifiers that affect  
the matching. The pattern modifiers are discussed in detail here:

   http://www.php.net/manual/en/reference.pcre.pattern.modifiers.php

Note that the UTF modifier (ā€œuā€) is not supported in Active4D.
