We noticed that we
were getting a lot of "404 Page Not Found" errors whenever the editor
attempted to load an .htc (HTML Components) file.

This issue was remedied by adding the .htc extension to the "executable
extensions" parameter in the Active4D.ini file. But, I don't want to
have to do this :-)

Unless you plan on putting Active4D code in .htc files, this is the wrong way to go about it. Looking at the "Non-Executable Request Handling" section of the "HTTP Server" chapter (page 58), I see the following:

3. If the requested file is found and the “serve nonexecutables” option is turned on, the file’s extension is checked. If it has an extension and the extension was specified in
ExtensionMap.ini, the content type of the file is set accordingly.

4. If there is no extension and Active4D is running on Macintosh, and the file’s creator/type combination was specified in ExtensionMap.ini, the content type is set
accordingly.

5. If no content type could be determined, the status is set to 404 (Not Found) and the
file will not be served for security reasons.

The above should answer your questions and show the correct way to add .htc as a non-executable (static) file type.
