Thanks to all of you who sent help and links !! I have now managed to solve the problem with the DNS error when trying to upgrade to AD. The error was caused by the fact that the machine is not connected to any network (why would it be !! its the first machine in a completely new test network) and when AD is installing, it tries to check the domain name you have entered with the Internet registration authority...which is unsuccessful because you are not linked to anything. So, the solution......disable the network card and install a MS Loopback address as the network adapter ! Finally success.
