I had a similar problem with the lsass.exe with SP2 and an invalid entry for
replication. There is a Q article that states that replication could be set
prior to SP2 with a valid number, however with SP2, this valid range is
smaller and the system give a similar error and reboots. Try finding the Q
article, find the replication value and modify it.

Use NTDSUTIL to transfer any FSMO roles off the server prior to taking the
server offline. Next take the server off-line. Then run NTDSUTIL on one of
the remaining servers, run metadata cleanup to remove the server. Let
replication occur to all servers. Then reinstall the server and run DCPROMO
again.

Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] Removing AD / Lsass.exe error

Hi Rob

Sorry, no great ideas on your lsass.exe problem. An option might be to
re-open your old incident with PSS and talk to them about it.

With regard to your related question, I don't think your plan would work,
because you would end up with a different GUID for the server. It would be
better to take the machine offline, rebuild and follow the procedure
outlined in "Removing Active Directory Data After an Unsuccessful Demotion
[Q216498]".

Arghhhh! Why does my pain never end!

I want to remove AD from a DC. Every time I run DCpromo an error msg box
pops up and displays :-

The system process lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code
-1073741819. The system will now shut down and restart.

The problem only occurs when I go to dcpromo the machine so no Technet
  articles seem to be relevant.

I have had this problem before and ran a patch suggested in a Technet
article which I had to obtain directly from MSoft. Of course when I ran
the patch the machine blue screened on reboot and was never to be seen
  again.

I don't want to be in this situation again so was just seeing if anyone
else had seen this before? and resolved it?

A question relating: If I just accept the machine will not demote, and I
just rebuild it, and then run DCPROMO will the machine just pick up
  more/less where it left off?

  Many Thanks,

  Rob
