Just
to extend on it!
The
support of both modes is required as an NT 4.0 domain that joins a AD Forest
does so initially in Mixed mode to allow the ongoing support of the NT 4.0 BDC's
still on the network. it is also required to ensure that you do not immediately
lose services such as RAS through permissions conflict. In a mixed of modes
based Forest the implications are that a domain that is in Mixed mode if there
are still NT 4.0 BDC's then clients will not be able to access resources in
other domains where the Transitive trust relationship is required (Explicit
trusts can overcome this). Also a domain in mixed mode does not support the
SIDHistory attribute and as such cannot have users migrated into it while
retaining access to existing resources of the original account. So with that
in certain circumstances the support of both during a migration phase
would be desirable (unless using third party migration tools such as
Fastlane).
