Title: Authentication vs. Replication traffic
This is a diffcult questoin and the answer probably varies depending on the environment, e.g. the number of changes replicated daily in your environment, the replication schedule, GC placement, service levels, budget, WAN redundancy, etc.  One way to approach it is to take your maximum (150 users) and see how it works out for a specific pilot location.  Depending on the performance you can then adjust your limit in the light of real-life experience.

It may be that a 3rd party tool such as DirectorySim from NetPro can help you make the decision for your specific environment.  I haven't looked at it myself however.

Subject: [ActiveDir] Authentication vs. Replication traffic

Does anyone have any comparisons between replication traffic and
authentication traffic?

I have some sites that will have between 50 and 150 users and I am trying to
determine a cutoff point for having a Domain Controller at the site or just
having them authenticate over the wire.

Most of the sites have a CIR of 64K with connections to the cloud ranging
from 128K to 512K so they are theoretically able to burst to the connection
speed.

What are some of the larger sites that we have created without a DC?

Thanks!
