When you say, "create an entry with the userpassword attribute", what sort of object did you create?
Anonymous access to the Active Directory is restricted by default. This means that access is only available to authenticated users. You can change this by granting READ permissions to the "Everyone" group on the relevant container(s). You must grant it from the root of the directory down to the container(s) of interest. Before you do this, you might want to consider the security implications for your environment.
