Well, I took the plunge and downloaded a free trial for 45 days.  It
backed up my SQL Server databases in less than 30 minutes.  That's about
14GB.  Not bad as far as time taken to do a backup.  I know it took at
least an hour and 15 minutes to do the same backup with Veritas.  Plus,
Veritas' support sucks.

I get the idea from the way you word your statement, that you "think"
you need to stop them with Veritas? You don't. You just need the agent
for both. All I can say is that Veritas makes a VERY reliable, ROCK

Supposedly it can perform a backup quicker than Veritas and the services
for Exchange and SQL do not have to be stopped.
