Yes, I did promote it.
And FSMO roles are okay (checked this by running netdiag and dcdiag).

After re-reading your post:
You installed a 'fresh BDC and upgraded it to Windows 2000 + ran DCPromo'
I trust you first promoted the new BDC to the PDC in the NT4 domain before
upgrading and running DCPromo?
And, if you do a 'netdom query fsmo' on any one of the Win2k DCs, what do you
get as a return?

Subject: [ActiveDir] Mixed mode problem
Hi,
Just installed a fresh BDC and upgraded it to Windows 2000 + ran
DCPomo.
Also installed a new Windows 2000 DC and transferred roles to it.
Moved WINS and DHCP to the new DC and registered servers.
Erased some manual entries in WINS.
However, clients keep logging into the old NT4 BDCs unless they are
down so the keep retaining their NT4 identity and not switching to work with AD.
Any idea why?
