just wanted to pick up on others experiences of using preferences (as
opposed to true policies) in w2k gp objects.

experiencing behaviour which is at best described as inconsistent in the
application / refresh of values set in the non-standard registry hives

issues may stem from the format of the *.adm files - these have been copied
across from a source NT4 domain - is this in fact a valid operation ??

the other observed behaviour is the refresh of the values set by these
persistent values;

eg change of background (not using Active Desktop - don't ask !!) so needing
to use the persistent value.

seems to take two attempts (logon, logoff, logon ) to refresh the background
to that set by the policy, and then only after the policy object is
modified.

this seems sort of consistent with this extract from p26 of the
"troubleshooting windows 2000 group policy whitepaper" -

"
If you must use preferences, preferences must be added via the .adm file. By
default, if nothing changes at the GPO, nothing gets applied to the client
computer (assuming the client has received policy in the past).

views on the whole issues of preferences (which unfortunately i need to
proceed with) will be VERY gladly received
