Forgive me if this comes through strange, I saw the post on the web archive and didn't see a way to respond through it so I just typed up a new message.

Anyway, the SP3 reg entry is a good solution, if however you don't have a W2K SP3 then you can add the additional name to your name table of your machine, this should work on NT4 and W2K. The issue is because in the NetBIOS/SMB handshake the name is verified and since you are using a CNAME, it doesn't align so the connection is refused during that handshake.

The reg value to add/modify is

hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\parameters\optionalnames.

It should be a reg_multi_sz so you can add multiple entries but a reg_sz will work.

One thing of note is that I do recall an issue using this on W2K Domain Controllers, seems that as netlogon fired up it would clear the extra names out of the name table though it has worked fine for me in the past on workstations and member/standalone servers.

Hello!  You all have been very helpful in the past and want to thank you for your time in helping me with various issues!

Please advise:  I’m in the middle of migrating from NT to W2K and have a DNS issue:  I want to create a CNAME record in my AD integrated DNS that points to a server that still resides in NT.  After I create the CNAME record I click on Start | Run and type: \\testcname.FQDN and get this in response:  A duplicate name exists on the network.

Has anyone encountered this scenario?   Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
