John is quite right. Also, if you have a single domain forest (which you don't) it doesn't matter if you make the DC hosting the IM a GC.
The IM is responsible for maintaining references from objects its own domain to objects in other domains. This allows, for example, a DC to display the membership of domain local groups that contain members from other domains. Very simply, the IM queries a nearby GC for updates and then informs the other DCs in its domain about the updates. In multi-domain environments the IM won't be able perform this role if its DC has been configured as a GC. So it's not a good idea to make the IM's DC a GC, even temporarily. If all the DCs in the domain are GCs then they will all receive the updated information anyway through standard GC replication. In other words they won't need to rely on the IM. And if you only have one domain then the IM doesn't have a role to perform because there are no references for it to maintain.
