Turns out that the DC’s we sent out were Service Pack 4 and the rest of our DC’s are SP3.  SP4 does not like Single-Layer DNS names so the DC in question needed a registry hack to fix the problem… Here is the KB link:

I run in to this all the time. I am in a large enterprise 400+ DC’s and we have one or more machines a day that have various issues I know for me sometimes to save time I use \forceremoval and then:

The clean it’s a LONG process. Anyone feel like scripting it I would be great full ;-)

KB332199 describes the forceremoval option. This option enables you to force the 'dcdemote'. However, this implies doing some cleaning up afterwards like removing metadata from the remaining DCs. Before using this quick and dirty method you should first try to resolve the problem. There can be several causes ... network connectivity problems, name resolution, authentication, replication, etc? To find out what is hindering you from demoting this server you should provide some more info ... is the server operating normal? What do dcdiag, netdiag, etc show?

Cheers,

John

Subject: [ActiveDir] Remove AD from DC

Has anyone had a problem removing AD from a DC that was in a remote site?  We’re getting some RPC and DNS errors on the box, specifically, “The directory Service failed to find a server to replicate off changes.  The security context could not be established due to a failure in the requested quality of service.”

Any thoughts on this?
