do you have E2K in your forest? Then you'll need to fix the schema prior to running ADPREP (see Q314649).

then
- run ADPREP /forestprep ONCE on the schema master (and wait for the changes to replicate to all DCs)
- run ADPREP /domainprep ONCE on the infrastructure master (and wait for the changes to replicate to all DCs)

you should not require a clean install, but after you've performed ADPREP, you can also add a new 2003 DC to the domain/forest. however a clean install (i.e. adding new 2003 DCs and de-promiting the existing 2000 DCs) is generally not a bad idea.

no, you don't need to move your roles around prior to the upgrade, but it is preferred to upgrade the PDC and/or Domain Naming master first (in case you choose to do a clean install, you'll want to move the PDC and Domain Naming master roles to your first 2003 DC)

Subject: [ActiveDir] Upgrade Domain

Ok, newbie here...

We're preparing to upgrade our Single Forest (Windows 2000 AD Domain) to a Windows 2003 Domain.
We have 3 Domain controllers all 2k, all running DNS.

My question is, do I have to Run ADPREP on all domain controllers or can I do a straight upgrade on all DC's without running ADPREP?

In my test lab after I ran ADPREP I was never able to do an Upgrade, the Server just hung on install and I had to do a clean install.

Also If I do and upgrade, since I only have 3 DC's should I move all the roles to one server and start the upgrade on that server first?

Thanks in advance.

Mike
